SAVE LUTHER!
I grew up in La Palma and went to Luther from Kindergarten to Sixth grade. I have many many wonderful memories and now my oldest daughter attends Kindergarten in the same room that I was in! The teachers from then to now are wonderful! I felt so grateful to have my children attend Luther and comfortable since I knew this school but now I will have to start all over and find another GREAT school to send my children to if Luther closes down. It would be a shame to have such an AMAZING school close down due to the districts budget. PLEASE FIND ANOTHER WAY INSTEAD OF CLOSING DOWN SCHOOLS - - SAVE LUTHER!

Steve Luther Possibly Closing Down?
Impossible. Steve Luther is a school that everyone loves, including me. Its a place where people who have graduated can go and visit their old teachers, having fun at the events, and hang out with friends. Steve Luther isn't only a placing for learning, but its a place where memories were created and friends are made. I just want to say that I love Steve Luther Elementary and I'm totally against it closing down!

We can save Luther Elementary School....
My middle son graduated from Luther last year after six wonderful years. My youngest son is sixth grade at Luther this year. My wife and I enjoyed sending our children to Luther and we'd like to keep the school open. We know many young families move into La Palma because of the quality of living and good schools. We moved to La Palma 18 years ago when our first son was one year old for the same reason.

Luther being the smallest school in the district, one might think that it should be one of the top candidates for closure. I am not sure if that is the case. Besides the size, there are few more important issues that the district has to consider.

The district made it clear that they want to generate income from the schools they might close thru development and/or leasing. They mentioned development of senior housing. In La Palma, Luther is currently zoned at school only. For the district to be able to develop the property, the zoning has to change. It can take years. We don't see it happening sooner than 4 to 5 years. This should not be favorable to the district who desperately needs income stream. However, Cypress has been much more friendly to the development possibilities. This must be enticing to the district.

Also, if they close Luther and try to lease it out to a private school for income due to inability to redevelop, they might create another problem. The private school might draw students mostly from the immediate neighborhood, La Palma. This means that they lose students and that means less money for the district.

There is no reason for us to be discouraged. We only have two months left before the committee makes a recommendation. Our representatives are doing wonderful job. Many parents seem to be stepping up to help. We have this website, the Google group, and the Facebook group. We need to inform and mobilize Luther parents first. We need to communicate our wishes to the district administrations and to the board members. We also need to mobilize the community members who are grandparents, uncles and aunts of the Luther students.
