Luther being the smallest school in the district, one might think that it should be one of the top candidates for closure. I am not sure if that is the case. Besides the size, there are few more important issues that the district has to consider.
The district made it clear that they want to generate income from the schools they might close thru development and/or leasing. They mentioned development of senior housing. In La Palma, Luther is currently zoned at school only. For the district to be able to develop the property, the zoning has to change. It can take years. We don't see it happening sooner than 4 to 5 years. This should not be favorable to the district who desperately needs income stream. However, Cypress has been much more friendly to the development possibilities. This must be enticing to the district.
Also, if they close Luther and try to lease it out to a private school for income due to inability to redevelop, they might create another problem. The private school might draw students mostly from the immediate neighborhood, La Palma. This means that they lose students and that means less money for the district.
There is no reason for us to be discouraged. We only have two months left before the committee makes a recommendation. Our representatives are doing wonderful job. Many parents seem to be stepping up to help. We have this website, the Google group, and the Facebook group. We need to inform and mobilize Luther parents first. We need to communicate our wishes to the district administrations and to the board members. We also need to mobilize the community members who are grandparents, uncles and aunts of the Luther students.
